Forum Schwanthaler Höhe Munich

Thin white concrete façade with an exposed aggregate finish

The building, originally used as a furniture store, was acquired by Hanseatische Betreuung- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft (HBB) and converted into a shopping district. Together with the adjacent neighborhood shopping center operated by Bayrische Hausbau, it forms the Forum Schwanthalerhöhe. The goal of the planning was to ensure that the two centers complement each other in terms of offerings. The new shopping destination is located in the immediate vicinity of the world-famous Theresienwiese. The project, which focuses on sustainability and diversity, involves an investment volume of approximately 240 million euros. Since the final completion and opening of the neighborhood center on June 6, 2019, visitors have been able to enjoy the retail and dining offerings in the newly structured area.

Covering approximately 2,300 square meters (24,700 ft2), DUCON’s white concrete panels define the building’s appearance. The panels feature a fine exposed aggregate finish with a grain size in Nordic White. They were attached to the substructure using undercut anchors installed into the elements, which are only 30 mm (1.2 in) thick. Over the course of about a year, more than 1,200 individual elements were manufactured and delivered from the precast plant to Munich.

Project data:

  • Execution period: 2017-2018 (Completion of overall measure 2019)
  • Facing panels with an exposed aggregate concrete finish, 30 mm (1.2 in) thick
  • 1,227 elements with a total area of approx. 2,300 m2 (24,700 ft2)
