Protective panels for Terminal 6 of John F. Kennedy Airport in New York

John F. Kennedy Airport, the largest of New York's three airports, is one of the most important hubs in the USA. The construction of Terminal 6 at the airport is taking place as part of extensive renovation work. Construction of the terminal, which will also be home to German airlines once completed, is expected to last until 2028.

The planners relied on high-performance concrete “Made in Germany” to protect the critical areas. Around 3,500 m2 of 64 mm thin DUCON protective panels were used to protect guests against explosions in the event of a terrorist attack. They were manufactured in the form of semi-finished panels, which were supplemented with a lightweight concrete layer on site to absorb the static loads during operation.

The elements were produced in Germany. The parts were loaded into sea containers at the prefabrication plant and transported to New York by ship. Despite the long transportation route, the use of the thin DUCON panels saved a large amount of material, energy and CO2 compared to a classic reinforced concrete solution.

Project data:

  • Execution period: 2023
  • Protective panels as semi-finished parts with a component thickness of 64 mm (2.5 in)
  • 974 elements with a total area of approx. 3,500 m2 (37,500 ft2)
