Increasing resistance to earthquakes
DUCON not only protects against man-made threats such as explosions, gunfire, and breakthroughs, but also provides a solution for protecting infrastructure in earthquake zones. The ductile behavior of the component allows it to absorb the horizontal acceleration resulting from earthquakes through deformation without the cross-section failing. To achieve this, the reinforced concrete column is encased in a thin layer of DUCON. In the event of a disaster, this prevents the reinforced concrete from breaking out. This ensures that the stability of the column and thus also of the entire building structure remains secure, as it prevents “progressive collapse” (the progressive failure of individual columns after the first column has failed).
Such coatings can be applied to both new and existing buildings, either as prefabricated elements or using in-situ concrete construction methods. DUCON reinforcement is a particularly economical solution, especially for the retrofitting of existing buildings. A thin additional layer is sufficient to ensure earthquake protection. In this way, the column diameter is only minimally increased, so that the usable space is hardly affected. Thanks to DUCON's simple installation process, the work can be completed in a very short time.
