Protective panels for a daycare center in Berlin
Critical infrastructure isn't always limited to data centers, embassies, or government buildings. Often, it also involves protecting public facilities. Take, for example, a Jewish daycare center in Berlin.
Out of fear of anti-Semitic attacks, it was decided — as part of planned renovation work — to install protective panels on parts of the building’s facade. DUCON was the perfect choice for this application, as its slim profile does not give the impression of barricading the building from the outside. In just a few weeks, the entire first floor of the building was outfitted. With a thickness of only 80 mm, the elements provide a high level of protection against potential attacks from gunfire or explosions.
The protective panels are precast elements in classic concrete gray. To create a look that suits a daycare center and conveys a sense of fun and play, the panels were painted in bright colors after installation. This allows the elements to blend into the building’s overall appearance and create a pleasant atmosphere.
Project data:
- Execution period: 2009-2010
- Protective panels with a component thickness of 80 mm (3 in)
- 34 elements with a total area of approx. 84 m2 (900 ft2)
