Protection of Critical Infrastructure in New York City

Due to its high level of protection combined with a thin and lightweight design, DUCON was installed in several areas of the One World Trade Center in New York City.

The first project in New York to rely on DUCON’s performance was at a checkpoint where incoming vehicles are screened for explosives. The main challenge of the project was an adjacent subway tunnel. Since the tunnel runs very close to the checkpoint, the thickness of the protective measures was limited. The minimal component thickness required for DUCON enables optimal protection without risking damage to the subway or other adjacent infrastructure in the event of an attack.

Once word had spread about DUCON’s protective properties, additional projects followed at One World Trade Center. Over the course of several years, a number of critical air shafts were reinforced. Once again, the key advantage was the slim profile of this high-performance material. At the job site, space was limited, which ruled out a bulkier solution, and lifting equipment of any size could not be used. The thin protective panels were easy to install on-site and have ensured safety ever since.
